Best Resume Colors and Fonts: How to Look Professional Without Being Boring
07 Oct 2026
A little colour makes your resume memorable, but readability always comes first.
Colour rules
- Use one main colour and one small accent. Apply colour to headings and thin lines, not body text.
- Keep body text dark grey or black on white for maximum contrast.
- Check that it still reads well when printed in black and white.
Safe combinations
- Navy + gold: corporate, finance, consulting.
- Charcoal + red: sales, marketing, creative roles.
- Teal + dark grey: tech, startups, design.
- Black + minimal accent: freshers and conservative industries.
Fonts
- Choose one clean sans-serif (Helvetica, Arial) or a classic serif (Times) for the whole resume.
- Body size 10–11 pt, headings 12–14 pt, name up to 24–28 pt.
- Avoid decorative or script fonts; they reduce readability and may confuse ATS software.
